This constant struggle continued even during the 17th century. Bermeo’s significance was based on real economic power. It had the largest fishing fleet in the whole of Spain (that fleet was owned by the city of Bermeo).Bermeo has never lost its tradition; it is still a very important fishing city in modern Spain.
